To ensure comprehensive quality education services, for individuals, families and communities through the analysis of data, the continual assessment of needs, outcomes, and effectiveness, and collaboration, to prevent disease, injury and disability.

Mitchell County Health Department Programs
Description of Services:

  • Immunization Program: for any age per guidelines; provide immunizations for vaccine preventable diseases as required by the CDC, State, and District Public Health guidelines; also provide information concerning immunizations needed for foreign travel.

  • Adult Health Program: upon referral by family physician with prescription for only certain kinds of blood pressure medicine, for blood pressure and diabetes clinic; insulin available at cost.

  • Tuberculosis Screening: usually referred by primary physician, or identified by Health Department; no charge for preventive measures and usually no charge for cases.

  • Infectious Diseases: HIV/STD/TB screening upon request of client or referral by primary physician; fees based upon services delivered, but no one is refused service due to lack of funds; also performs testing, counseling, and follow-up on clients being served by New Life Center for Women at no charge.

  • Child Health Services: 'for ages birth to 21 years; quality health assessment and services for: physical development, nutritional assessment, laboratory screening, vision, hearing, and anticipatory guidance; follow-up as needed; provide applications and referrals to Children's Health Services.

  • Early Intervention: Health Department refers babies age birth to 36 months who have developmental delays or are at risk for developmental delays. Provides: service coordination which assists families arranging special therapies, arranging transportation, financial assistance for services not covered by Medicaid or insurance; assist with respite care, providing information, evaluation, assessment, and individual family service plan development; also offer developmental clinics.

  • Women, Infants and Children (WlC): for pregnant and post-partum women, and children age birth through 5 years who meet income eligibility. A special supplemental food program for women, infants and children which improves health and nutritional status; provides nutritious foods to supplement diet, information on healthy eating, counseling, and referral for health care.

  • Family Planning Services: comprehensive examination, including breast exam and Pap smear, lab tests as appropriate, contraception counseling, follow-up and referral as appropriate, treatment for infections as indicated; fees based on sliding scale.

  • Pregnancy Related Services: for Medicaid eligible women, Health Department Nurse provides postpartum home visit within 3 to 14 days of delivery of infant, to new mother and baby for counseling and follow-up.

  • Perinatal Case Management: nurse available to make home visit to new mother/baby

  • Babies Born Healthy: for pregnant clients who are not Medicaid eligible or do not have significant health coverage (program has specific income guidelines) to provide comprehensive care for those who experience a normal uncomplicated pregnancy/delivery and postpartum period; must use a participating physician.

Description of Services:

  • Subdivision review and approval for development
  • Individual lot evaluation for wells and septic tank
  • Sampling of water from wells
  • Complaint investigation of any health concern
  • Rabies control officer
  • Food Service inspections and permits
  • Day Care immunization audits
  • Swimming pool evaluation and inspection (public pools only)
  • Accessibility surveys for disabled/handicapped access
  • Evaluation of recreational areas
