Meetings: Mitchell County Planning Commission meet – 3rd Thursday of each month 27 North Court St., Camilla – Mitchell County Board of Commissioners meeting room Planning Commission Board is made up of 10 citizens appointed by the county commission residing outside of the city limits.

Description of Services:

  • Issue building permits. (Brochure) Mitchell County requires that structures be built to the International Building Codes. A Georgia State license is required for Contractor, Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical (A/C) work; Unless the homeowner is actually doing the work on his/ her own single-family dwelling (the homeowner will be required to sign a liability waiver). The owner or builder applies for the permit with Mitchell County Building & Zoning.

Items needed for a Building Permit:

  • Well and/or Septic Tank Permit from the Health Department
    (229-336-2055)
  • If a driveway is needed – permit from Mitchell County Public Works Dept. (229-336-2048). On a state highway, permit from Georgia Dept. of Transportation (229-430-4198) is needed.
  • Site Plan showing building setbacks and location of driveway.
  • House plans or a sketch for review. (Bldg. Inspector retains until final inspection).
  • Contractor’s business license and state card.
  • Plumber’s business license and state card.
  • Electrician’s business license and state card.
  • HVAC’s business license and state card.
  • If the owner is doing all of his own work, contractor information is not needed.
  • Elevation Certificate if in a Flood Zone.

Required Inspections – It is the contractor's responsibility to see that these and all other applicable requirements are met:

  1. FOUNDATION – Before pouring concrete (excavated with steel in place)
  2. ROUGH-IN– Before concealing electrical, plumbing, and framing (prior to insulation)
  3. FINAL INSPECTION – Before occupying premises
  • Issue business licenses.
  • Issue mobile home location permits, and inspect the setup of the home.
  • Zoning enforcement and rezoning assistance. After determining the zoning of your property we will assist you in the rezoning process if a change is required for your intended use.
  • Subdivision Regulations (see brochure).
  • Code Enforcement. The Code Enforcement officer addresses blight, nuisances, and enforces the code by the Mitchell County ordinances to maintain a clean and safe environment for the citizens in our community.
  • FEMA Flood Maps are available in our office for your review.
